Safe Haven’s new arrivals have begun to adjust to life here, right across the border from their home of Karen state, with Safe Haven residents pitching in to help them feel welcome at the orphanage. Most of the children are studying and sleeping in the church building, while the older boys have begun to build amazing new huts in the surrounding areas.
During the day, the children receive Karen and English lessons, and divide the rest of their time between playing and doing chores, such as cooking, cleaning and washing their own clothes. Their independence and resilience is awe-inspiring.
Rita Lobo from Brazil and Alex Martins from South Africa arrived at Safe Haven on June 10 to teach English to the Safe Haven children, who receive some English instruction at school, and to the new arrivals. They have been enchanted by the children’s spirit and willingness to learn, despite great adversity, and look forward to staying at the orphanage for as long as possible.
During the first week of June, Safe Haven became a place of refuge for a large group of students and a few teachers from a school just across the border in Burma, as well as a number of families also fleeing the most recent violent offenses against the Karen people. The new arrivals were clearly dazed and shaken, but have been doing their best to find solace here at Safe Haven.

Recently, there have been several new offenses by the junta’s military forces, joined by the DKBA, in an effort to finally eradicate the Karen people in what has become the world’s longest running civil war. Everyone at Safe Haven is doing their best to help those that have escaped find a measure of peace and safety, if only temporarily.

The widows and single mothers are some of the poorest and most exposed groups along the borderline between Thailand and Burma. Independent widow project offers a cooperation where they can produce local handicraft, improve their skills and get a decent income to take care of their children.
The project is founded by Tasanee, Hedda and Line and our motto is Step by Step!

The Orphanage is located Thai-Burmese border. During the summer time the children and our volunteer teachers go swimming down by the river. The Orphanage is situated in a quiet village right off of the Moi River. It is nestled amongst breathtakingly beautiful mountainous vistas.

The children are very good at helping each other out with whatever task is at hand. The children sometimes go down to the river to catch fish which they will later share with the others. They also enjoy hiking the nearby hills. They are always up for some fun adventure or another and are enthusiastic about sharing what they know.

Those who come to the orphanage are forever touched by these children. They embrace new visitors with open arms. They are eager learners and their smiles are contagious. It is never easy when one of our volunteers has to return to their country.

All the children love to play and they greatly enjoy each others company. Here you can see the children playing by the riverside.

The children at the Orphanage are all very creative and enjoy arts and crafts. They have all learned how to make hand-made beaded bracelets, hand-made blank books, frosted mirrors, decorated cards and some of them have even learned the difficult craft of weaving. Above are some examples of the children’s work.

This bracelet is made by the orphanage children. Big mother teaching all her children have to learn how is hard to get money.
